Chapter Nineteen
Miranda held on to Richâs broad shoulders and then held his broad jawline in her hands. Liv wanted to gag.
âI am so glad you could make it, Richard,â Miranda said before pulling him back into another long hug.
Liv watched in horror from the couch as Miranda made a show of kissing Richâs cheek beneath the mistletoe. Mistletoe sheâd insisted on hanging. âBarf.â
Mirandaâs ridiculous smile had to be painful. âIt wouldnât have felt like Christmas without you.â
Liv knew her face reflected just how disgusted she felt. âDouble barf.â
Jesse leaned in. âIs that the guy? The ex?â
âHeâs not an ex. They were never a thing despite Mirandaâs twisted version of history.â
âMaybe Theo never told you about it because she knows how much of a Jealous Judy you are. Letâs just hope they stay away from the mistletoe.â
Liv turned very slowly to look at Jesse. She cocked her head. âI know youâre used to drama,â she said, shifting her eyes briefly to a distracted Eloise, âbut thatâs not how we roll in this house.â
Jesse lowered her head, properly scolded. âIâm sorry, but you have to admit it feels like an ex situation.â
Liv followed Jesseâs eyes and watched Rich hold Theo a bit too long for her liking. âNow Iâm really going to barf.â
âHey, everyone,â Rich said, addressing the room. No one really seemed all that interested in his arrival, much to Livâs satisfaction. âWhat are we up to?â
âThereâs still some desserts on the table and coffee in the percolator. If youâre hungry, I can put a plate together for you.â Theo stepped away before she continued talking. âWhat can I get you?â
Liv understood Theo had to be a polite hostess, and she also reminded herself Miranda was to blame for this uncomfortable situation. Thankfully, she was prepared. âCan I get you something to drink, Rick?â
âRich,â Miranda and Rich both said, correcting her simultaneously.
Liv smiled internally. âWe have wine, beer, water, and soda. Whereâs your wife?â
âWe split,â Rich said to Theo. âA few months ago.â Jesse started coughing and had to step away.
Theo tilted her head in sympathy. âIâm so sorry.â
Liv felt that backfire like a punch to her face. âWine, beer, or soda?â
âOr brandy,â Miranda said.
âNot the brandy.â If Liv couldnât drink the brandy, neither could Rich.
âSpeaking of,â Rich said, ignoring Liv completely, âthis is for you. I know you love a good cabernet.â He handed Theo a red and green plaid bag.
Theo took the gift and looked directly at Liv. She walked away from Rich and stood next to Liv. âYou didnât have to do that, but we appreciate it.â
âCome on, Theo. You know it wouldnât be polite for me to show up empty-handed.â Richâs eyes held far too much adoration.
Liv cleared her throat. âYouâre right. Never show up uninvited or empty-handed. How about that drink?â
Rich didnât look away from Theo. âIâll take a beer. Thanks.â
Liv walked to the kitchen, breathing in and out rhythmically to keep calm. She grabbed a beer from the fridge and gave it a small shake before bringing it to Rich.
